In His famous Sermon on the Mount, Jesus revealed to us an important part of who we are, “You are the light of the world,” (Matthew 5:14). And Jesus said this confidently, with no reservations – we were created to be a light to those around us.
Do you turn on the light during the day when the sunlight is streaming in? Probably not. But it is at night, when it is dark, that a light source becomes most useful and essential. Likewise, God has not called us to bright places, but to the dark places – to the least, the last, and the lost. When we decided to follow Jesus, it was as if a little candle within us was lit by the larger flame of Christ – and so we have the ability to shine with the same brightness as Christ and bring His light to the places that need it the most.
We often forget it, but we are the hands, feet, and light of Christ here on Earth. God has not lit a flame in us for it to be hidden, but He urges us, “let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). Christ is calling us this day to be the light of the world – be it in a smile, a small gesture, or a kind word, let us bring the light of Christ to illuminate the communities we have been placed in, that they might see Christ in us and feel the warmth of His love.
How might you let Christ’s light in you shine before others today?
